In
1953, the Kiwanis Club turned over to the City of Moncton the
field now known familiarly as Kiwanis Park - the site of the
1975 Intercontinental Cup, the 1997 World Junior Baseball
Championship and many Canadian championships. After an
expenditure of $38,000 and more than nine years to develop the
field, it was granted to the City of Moncton to be maintained
as a minor baseball field. As a result of the grant, the
City's Recreational Department came into being in 1953.
Kiwanis Park has undergone many facelifts since those days and
is now considered the largest baseball facility east of
Olympic Stadium in Montreal and probably the most widely-known
in Atlantic Canada. Normal seating capacity is 3,500 with
temporary seating increasing that to 7,500. The Moncton Keefe
Cubs hosted the park's first national tournament in 1968, the
Canadian Junior Baseball Championship. The 1997 World Junior
Baseball Championship attracted well over 100,000 baseball
fans during the 10 days of the tournament. Kiwanis Park was
also the host to the 2004 Canadian Senior Baseball
Championship.
It
is now "home base" of the Moncton Tim Hortons Junior and
Midget Cubs baseball teams as well as being the home field of
the Moncton Mets of the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League.
Games are played almost daily from May through September.
MDMBA has operated the canteen in the adjacent Dud James Arena
since 1970 and we also have a barbeque on-site during most
games in the summer months.
